The Finest Hours | Directed By: Craig Gillespie | Rating: 8.4 / 11 |
With so many film releases every year (and the constant release of every TV network’s original programming), not every movie gets the attention it deserves. Disney’s The Finest Hours is based on the true story of the U.S. Coast Guard’s most daring sea rescue to date. Besides pulling off an incredible feat, this film contains humor, love and an incredible ensemble cast (especially impressed with the acting chops of Michael-Raymond James). While the storm scenes were probably meant to be viewed on the big screen, watching it at home will save many from getting seasick while maintaining the same sense of panic and urgency.
Chris Pine plays Captain Bernie Webber, a young US Coast Guard crewman, who in true Disney fashion, believes he can make the impossible possible. While his Coast Guard boss knowingly sends him out on a death mission, Bernie’s positive naivety and determination to save the sinking tanker full of men keeps his 12-seat rescue boat afloat. Besides presenting the point of view from both the men of the SS Pendleton and Captain Webber’s rescue boat, The Finest Hours also highlights the efforts and emotions of the townsfolk of Chatham in a truly captivating journey.
Now available on DVD, Blu-Ray and Digital HD, The Finest Hours is a great film for the whole family to enjoy. And for you history buffs, the bonus features include interviews with the original men involved in this mission, townsfolk who witnessed it and even Bernie Webber’s daughter. Plus plenty of cast interviews (mainly of Chris Pine and Casey Affleck) and deleted scenes as well. So, don’t miss out on getting to know this heroic American tale.
