Mortdecai | Blu-Ray + Digital HD | Rating: 7.7 / 11 |
There isn’t always budget to appropriately market every film’s release, and sometimes a cult gem sneaks by unseen by the majority of the nation. This just might be the case with Mortdecai, a modern slapstick comedy of a spy film featuring an unbelievably talented cast (Johnny Depp, Evan McGregor, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Goldblum, Paul Bettany and more) which left the theaters as fast as it entered them in late January.
The concept is a simple one: An out-of-his-mind and out-of-the-ordinary man, Charlie Mortdecai, must navigate through the black market art dealers to find a missing painting. Produced by Depp, who plays Charlie Mortdecai in a very Ed Wood-type manner, Mortdecai is your classic comedic “whodunnit” complete with the cheesy spy music and sophomoric humor. While the suspense never really built up, the adventure was worth a good laugh or two. The real stand out performance was Paul Bettany though whose constant put-on deep voice must’ve left his throat sore at the end of the day.
Mortdecai‘s quick theatrical escape may leave you questioning the quality of the film, but fans of A Million Ways To Die In The West, Austin Powers or even Zoolander will enjoy this impressive ensemble cast. Especially those who enjoy British versus American comedic comparisons. Now available on Blu-Ray and DVD.
