Band of the Day: Viva City

posted by High Voltage Staff | Monday, March 29, 2010 | 6:37 PM
Have you heard Viva City yet? An UK electronic-rock band that will blow your mind. Currently we only have their 2010 music sampler with six tracks, but those six tracks provide a dance party you can't resist. They played our HIGH VOLTAGE event last night at The Viper Room and if their recorded music wasn't enough, their live show took the band to a whole new level in our eyes. With a high energy stage presence, glam rock style and electronic flare it's possible this band might be music's best kept secret at the moment. However, that won't last long... SPREAD THE WORD - VIVA CITY ROCKS!

Of The Moment: The Patient & I

I've had my eye on this artist for a while now... and with good reason. Many bands attempt the Acoustic/Electronic/Ambient sound, but Lewis Wall A.K.A. The Patient And I has the combination just right: heartfelt lyrics and grand arrangements brought together by a graceful voice. ~ Naimah Holmes

TPAI is currently the guitarist for another HV favorite, Balance Problems, who are currently supporting Morning Sun and There's Life in the Trees.

Primavera has arrived!

posted by High Voltage Staff | Saturday, April 26, 2008 | 12:27 AM

I only know of California via TV, movies, and the internet. Lame I know! Recently I found out about a band called Primavera and I'd like to thank California for not birthing yet another generic rockband. So, thank you California! Even better thank you to Jessica De Grasse for the etheral vocals, Lyle Tilo Reust (guitar), Thomas Teal (bass), and Randall Wagner (drums) for making rock music interesting again. It's more than just your run of the mill rock. There's substance here! Melodies! Sky-scraping bridges to take you from here to there, and believe me you want to be there. Go take a listen! A few hours will go by before you notice you've had their MySpace page up the entire time. — Naimah Holmes

Primavera in Spanish means "spring time," how appropriate!

HYMNS - "I Can’t Be What U Want"

posted by High Voltage Staff | Monday, November 12, 2007 | 7:55 PM
HYMNS
Rock / Indie / Folk Rock

After a year of relentless touring with Ben Kweller & Sam Roberts Band; 4 SXSW parties; DFest with The Flaming Lips; a change in band members and countless shows with other talented musicians, HYMNS finally entered the studio again. A month later they emerged with new music showcasing their talents as musicians. The band HYMNS have been featured in High Voltage before but another shout out to them seems appropriate. They just released their new single, "I Can’t Be What U Want" from their forthcoming album, Travel in Herds. The album is slated for release March 2008 on Blackland Records. While most bands suffer a sophomore slump, HYMNS have truly outdone themselves with their soon-to-be sophomore release. "I Can’t Be What U Want" is catchy and robust new single and is one of the strongest songs I’ve heard come out of HYMNS. The trumpet and banjo add an extra layer, setting the song at a faster pace than most fans are used to hearing from the band. This song takes you on a journey through heartbreak. Musically, there is a beginning, a climax, and an end that leaves the listener wanting more. The guitar solo by Jason Roberts near the end of the song truly showcases his skill and talent as a guitar player. I hope there will be many more of these on the forthcoming album. &mdash Mai Huynh

Ike, the little band that could. Formerly know as The John Faye Power Trip, they keep the hits coming. Philadelphia is lucky to have them still around. I'm suprised New York or LA hasn't stolen this four piece rock band away from us!

Led by the ever so talented Mr. John Faye, Ike have been at it since 2003. Sharing the stage with REM, Butch Walker, Matthew Sweet, and Jersey's own Bon Jovi (after winning a nation wide contest.)

With two full-length CD's, and constant rotation on local stations such as WMMR and WXPN, we can expect this rock band to keep us rockin along wherever we may be heading. — Naimah Holmes

OTM: Steel Train

posted by High Voltage Staff | Thursday, September 27, 2007 | 1:03 PM

Biography
Much like Southern rock revivalists My Morning Jacket and Kings of Leon, Steel Train essay a post-punk take on the hoary sounds of '70s album-oriented rock; it's classic rock radio sent through a few hipster fuzz pedals. Singer Scott Irby-Ranniar and guitarist Jack Antonoff formed Steel Train (taking their name from the Bob Marley song of the same title) as a busking duo in New York City in 1999. Adding second guitarist Matthew Goldman, bassist Evan Winiker, and drummer Matthias Gruber, the nascent five-piece signed to the successful emo label Drive Thru Records in 2002, releasing the debut EP For You My Dear early the next year. This was followed in 2004 by 1969, a concept EP of six songs from the titular year by the Jackson 5, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Bob Marley, David Bowie, the Beatles, and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Steel Train's debut full-length, Twilight Tales from the Prairies of the Sun, was released in 2005, featuring several songs about the breakup of Antonoff's relationship with actress Scarlett Johansson. After touring for the album was completed, Goldman and Gruber left Steel Train, replaced by guitarist Daniel Silbert and drummer Jon Shiffman. — Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

If not, Some Mad Hope is 44 minutes of uninterrupted extremely pleasurable well-crafted pop tunes - perfect for those long drives or just making you feel warm and fuzzy inside. Highlights include "Come On Get Higher," "Wedding Dress," and "Gone."

The Presets
Meet The Presets. Not sure where they came from (Australia), not really sure what they do (make electro pop that gets your ass shaking), but I like it.

If you're one of those who need precise descriptions and want to have a grip of what's going on here, keep reading.

Biography:
Kimberley Isaac Moyes was but a young man, small of stature but big of heart, down on his luck, doing the odd performance in a downtown gay bar and eating anchovies from tin cans discarded in the alley behind a local Italian restaurant, putting all his dollar bills in a pillow, with the dream to one day have enough money to buy a Moog synthesiser.

Julian Hamilton was the new bus boy in said food joint, robust and ambitious, taking out the trash and sweating like a malaria ravaged wrestler when he one day chanced upon poor Kim out the back, sucking on those oily little fish like hed never tasted such a delicacy.

These encounters out the back of Luigis Linguini And Pasta Allsorts became regular, and led to the occasional lunch date, when Julian would not only smuggle Kim a fresh can of anchovies, but would even share his own chef-cooked meal. The boys found friendship over faggotini, had leisurely lunches scheming up ways for Kim to stay one step ahead of the Child Protection Services who longed to send the delinquent off to an orphanage in Mongolia, they dreamed of the myriad ways Julian could swindle his evil boss Luigi, and held heated debates about their shared passion, music.

It was in these early days that Kim and Julian realized their meeting had been fateful, and that one day they would make good on their shared desire to make moody, crisp electronic future pop.

If youve ever wondered what they might play when youre standing there staring at the fork in the road between heaven and hell, this could be it.

Dirty Fuzz

posted by High Voltage Staff | Thursday, March 1, 2007 | 9:35 PM

BIO :
From the crowded and crumbling streets of London emerge a band with a brand of rock n roll as belligerent and inspired as the graffiti that informs the capital's walls.

Through the haze of dust ridden, dirt fuelled guitars propelled by a primitive and unrelenting bottom end comes a vocal so steeped in soul and blues that it takes you back to the glory days of music.

The sound is steeped in tradition with sources from Muddy Waters, Robert Johnson and John Lee Hooker to Led Zeppelin, ACDC and the Stooges. Add a little Tina Turner and James Brown to the vocal mix and you begin to understand Dirty Fuzz as a band.

The combination of the music, inspired by brooding guitarist Andy Morrison, with Elida's vocals, has lead to many interesting comparisons in the press. Art Rocker said that the band sounded like The Stooges fronted by Tina Turner, and XFM (London's leading alternative rock FM radio station) likened them to The Bellrays.

Dead Dog In Black Bag

Drum machine + synths + two British chicks + funny lyrics = Dead Dog In Black Bag

Their name is rather disturbing (they even have a photo of it to go along with one of their tracks) but once you get past that, you'll have an amusing listen. All four tracks on their MySpace are worth a listen. "Love Meat" left me with the urge to shower. "Tony Caesar" is perfect for those of us ladies who are tired of losers... so basically everyone. :o) "Boys In Bands" could be an anthem for the girls who can't stay away from those guys in bands and know better but just... can't stop. Didn't care much for "Breeding For Money" but the other tracks make you quickly forget.

Stumbled upon this artist while doing the usual MySpace music searches. He seems to be in a number of other bands (still doing the research on him), but so far I'm really liking what I'm hearing. Who knew Kansas City had talent?!

Justin lists Bob Dylan as an influence. By simply looking at that photo, it's obvious. Can't go wrong with that influence though, right?

So yeah, I don't do this often... or at least consistently to the point where it's an actual feature. Let's pretend for a second that I share a new band every day; every day you read this blog (we're pretending, remember?) and you come across the "band of the day" feature (still pretending). Your curiosity compels you to click on the featured band. Your ears are then assaulted with sounds that blow your senses out of orbit. PRETEND! Well I've got one for your ear drums to dance on beat to.

New Young Pony Club
This is the part I hate, trying to persuade you to listen to a band just because I said so. Who cares what I have to say. I like what I like, just like you like what you like. This band makes me dance in my seat (or in my bed since that is where I am right now. Don't get kinky, now). I'm a fan of the "'80s sound." ("new wave" if you will) Give me heavy synths, flashy lasers as I call them, and gnarly dance beats any day. I am one happy camper. With that said, I like this band. Give them a listen, just a quickie (again, no kinky business). If you don't like, I'll give you back your money... yeah.

"Get Lucky" and "Ice Cream" are definitely worth a few listens. C'mon, what do you have to lose besides a few minutes of your life? Trust me, you would've used those minutes on something far less productive. You know it's true.

Howdy boys and girls!

We've got a new and exciting band for all of you to check out. Their bringing back a sound that hasn't been around nearly enough and coming soon to a venue near you is, VAN GUNN.

Signed to Retone Records, Van Gunn is celebrating their debut album by heading out on their first US tour. Covering as much of the states as they can in an one month period before coming home to rest and starting all over again. Their a five piece from Holland now living in West Hollywood, CA. Looking into the future, Van Gunn is bringing back true guitar driven rock n roll, before the rest of the industry catches on. This will be the next fad in music and we love it! Think Thin Lizzy, Bon Jovi, AC/DC type stuff. And if that's not good enough, their cute too ;)

Check out some goodies on their myspace, particularly their introduction video which they customized for myspace. What a cool idea!
